National Umbrella Day, February 10 and Weatherman Celebrates 5 Years

February 10, 2023

Every year (whether you were aware of the tradition or not) we recognize February 10th as National Umbrella Day to celebrate one of the world’s most useful and essential inventions!

While you might not see the significance in honoring an inanimate object on this day, here at Weatherman, we’re thrilled to show our special umbrellas the love and attention they deserve!

But today isn’t just any National Umbrella Day. This year’s celebration is a little extra noteworthy. Today, we’re also celebrating a major milestone at Weatherman – our official 5th year in business!

Here’s a special note from founder, Rick Reichmuth.

It’s one of my favorite times of the year and this year, it’s five times as sweet. As we celebrate this great milestone of 5 years in business, I am reminded to take a step back and recognize just how much this company has accomplished. From a “light-bulb moment” in a department store to an industry leading brand with more than a dozen employees (and growing), I think it’s easy to say that Weatherman has come an incredibly long way in 5 years.

But what makes this time especially touching to me is that I can seize it as an opportunity to celebrate the people who have played the most important part in accomplishing all of this â€“ and that’s you! Without you giving us a chance, recommending us to your loved ones, sporting us around your city, and supporting our missions, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

So, thank you. Thank you for 5 years and cheers to many more to come.

In order to show our gratitude to our loyal customers, we’re taking 25% off our five best sellers including out Neon Orange Travel Umbrella, Black Collapsible Umbrella, Folds of Honor Stick Umbrella, 62” Golf Umbrella (White), and our Arnold Palmer 68” Golf Umbrella! Shop now.

5 Fun Facts About Umbrellas

In honor of Weatherman turning 5 and National Umbrella Day, we’re going to take this opportunity to shower you with 5 fun facts about umbrellas that you probably didn’t know. Who doesn’t love learning something new? (You never know when a random umbrella fact will come in handy… Did somebody say trivia night?)

  1. Umbrellas date back over 3000 years to ancient China, Egypt, and other civilizations.
  2. The word “umbrella” comes from the Latin word “umbra” or “umbros”, which means shade or shadow.
  3. The first “folding” umbrella wasn’t invented until 1969 by a man named Bradford Phillips.
  4. Up until the 18th century, umbrellas were viewed exclusively as an accessory for women. (The first man to publicly rock an umbrella and “normalize” it as an accessory for men went by the name Jonas Hanway.)
  5. Over 33 million umbrellas are sold every year in the US alone!

Happy National Umbrella Day

National holidays may seem silly or unnecessary. But to us, we like to think of them as a moment to stop and appreciate what you have. Even if it’s just the little things! Like having a travel umbrella in your bag when a surprise shower catches you off-guard. So for every time your trusty umbrella has protected you from the elements, today you have a reason to celebrate!
